The Drunken Duck - Barngates

The Drunken Duck offers a stylish bar area – less rustic than it used to be a few years ago, but hey ho – restaurant areas, its own-brewed beers stunning views and fine bedrooms.

The Drunken Duck gets its unusual name from the well told legend of a Victorian landlady who thought her ducks were dead on finding them stretched out on the road – after some unfortunate plucking, spurred on by the landlady’s belief the ducks were dead and ready for the pot, it transpired the ducks were drunk and not deceased.

Apparently a barrel of beer had slipped its hoops in the cellar, spilling beer into the ducks’ feeding area which they gladly drank – the legend goes that the guilt-stricken landlady knitted the ducks woolen waistcoats until their feathers grew back.

This is a classic gastropub with 4 AA Rosette food – the other draw is their own-brewed ales on handpump from the Barngates Brewery – including Brathay Gold, Cat Nap, Cracker Ale, Goodhews Dry Stout, Pale, Red Bull Terrier and Tag Lag, plus their own weiss beer – they also offer 16 wines by the glass from an excellent list.

The pub sits in a beautiful spot – offers superb food and drink – has plenty of seating areas – and high quality bedrooms if you want to stay – what more could you ask for?
