The Company Shed, West Mersea - Essex

Excellent fishmongers & highly regarded seafood restaurant tucked away in West Mersea down in Essex.

Heather Haward opened The Company Shed in the late 1980s – primarily as a weekend venture – selling fish from local boats plus the world renowned oysters produced by her husband Richard.

Richard Haward’s Oysters supply some of the finest oysters in the world -Richard Haward is the seventh generation oysterman, with his sons Bram and Tom being the eighth – their ethos is that the key to cultivating oysters continues to be respecting nature and honouring the history of this unique industry.

At the start she sold crab, prawns and shrimps out of the window and this eventually evolved into her serving cold platters and oysters inside the Shed – the restaurant has grown over the years in size, popularity and offering – now you can order a spectacular array of hot food, cold food and alcoholic beverages.

Internationally renowned chefs such as Rick Stein and Jay Rayner have praised the restaurant and it has been recognised in the Times, the Guardian and Independent as being one of the best fish restaurants to experience.

The overwhelming success of The Company Shed has led to Heather opening another restaurant on the east side of the island – Mehalah’s – managed by her son Tom, it is fast gaining a reputation as one of the best restaurants on the island.
