Snowdon Mountain Railway

Snowdon Mountain Railway take you to the top of the highest mountain in Wales – Snowdon, at 1085m, dominates the landscape of the Snowdonia National Park in North Wales.

The railway was established 1896 as Snowdon Mountain Tramroad and Hotels Company Limited – Snowdon Mountain Railway is the only Heritage Railway in the UK which has operated uninterrupted since its inception as a commercial tourist railway.

The unique ABT rack and pinion railway is the only one of its kind in the UK and the company is still proad owners of the original Swiss steam locomotives from 1896.

This memorable train journey starts with the first views of the waterfall plunging into the gorge below – to the stunning sights over the sheer edge of the Rocky Valley ridge.

On a clear day you can see Ireland, England, Scotland and the Isle of Man from Hafod Eryri, the Snowdon Summit Visitor Centre – The Summit Café offers a selection of hot and cold drinks and snacks – from warming Welsh oggies to fresh cream cakes.

There are two ways to travel on the Snowdon Mountain Railway –

The Original Steam Locomotives from 1896 with heritage carriages are an accurate re-construction of the original Snowdon Mountain Tramroad & Hotels Co Ltd 1896 observation carriages – seating only 34 – passengers who prefer a little more room should book their trip on a steam service.

The Traditional Diesel Service – pushed by one of the Hunslet Engine Company diesel locomotives with diesel carriages which seat 74 passengers -10 per compartment.

The Station at Llanberis offers – the Snowdon Mountain Railway Film Theatre including their very own production “To the Summit of Snowdon” a fifteen minute film describing the history of our Railway which includes stunning views of Mount Snowdon.

As well as the film theatre there is a Station Buffet serving a range of hot and cold snacks and drinks and the Platform Grill.
