Broughton Village Bakery & Café

Broughton Village Bakery has served the village of Broughton since the 1930’s and has passed through the hands of more than one local family –  at the beginning of the 20th century Broughton in Furness an important market town – in 1928 Mr and Mrs Shaw owned the bakery and opened the shop as a cafe on Tuesdays – the reason being – on Tuesdays the auction market was open for the trade in cattle and sheep – the cattle farmers went to the Kings Head for a bite to eat and to whet their whistle but the sheep farmers who at that time walked to market and back favoured a cup of tea in the hand and a pie if the sale went well, before the long walk home – they used to visit the bakery for the pie and would ask the Shaws if they could supply the tea to go with it – so began the cafe.

The bakers start early to ensure that the shop table is laden with a display of freshly made artisan breads, pies, pasties, sausage rolls, desserts, cakes – ingredients are sourced locally and organically -local butchers and greengrocers are used – the Fairground in Staveley for Organic Coffee Beans, Procters Cheeses in Chipping, Carrs in Carlisle and free range eggs from Mark in Ulverston.

The cosy café has a wood burning stove and a comfy sofa for total relaxation after a walk on the Fells – the menu has been created around the bakery produce and offers down-to-earth, good quality food made from locally sourced ingredients.

Breakfast, lunch, snacks, freshly ground organic coffees, a range of organic teas, Green & Blacks organic hot chocolate, thick shakes, frappes and smoothies are served by the delightful team of friendly and welcoming staff.
